In this study, we discuss Jesus’ trial before the Roman prefect – Pontius Pilate. We see from Luke’s account that Jesus actually stood trial before Pilate twice. Between these hearings, upon learning that Jesus was a Galilean, Pilate sent Jesus to Herod Antipas the tetrarch of Perea and Galilee hoping that Herod would either condemn Jesus or release Him. Being unable to pass responsibility, Pilate condemned Jesus to be crucified after warning the Jews that Jesus’ blood would be upon their own hands since Pilate found Jesus innocent of any crime deserving death.
This passage also tells us that Judas Iscariot – Jesus’ betrayer – repented of his betrayal after learning that Jesus was condemned, and hanged himself. However, we noted some discrepancies between Matthew’s account and other scriptures regarding Judas’ death.
