The Twelve – Judas Iscariot

Most of us think of Judas Iscariot as the great villain of the Bible. We revile him nearly as much as we do Satan. Yet Jesus chose Judas to be an apostle. This raises a number of challenging questions and serves as a caution that any of us can fall victim to temptation.

The Perfect Servant

Jesus frequently taught that whoever would be greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven must be the servant of all in our lives. Jesus Himself modeled this life of service for us, perfectly fulfilling the prophecy we find in Isaiah 53 of God's servant who takes upon Himself God's rightful punishment (death) for the sins of all mankind. Jesus Himself said that He offered Himself as a ransom for many. So, since we have this perfect model of servitude shown to us by our LORD, we must also humble ourselves and become servants of all.

The Twelve – Matthew

Matthew was by profession a collaborator with the hated Roman occupiers, and tax collectors in general were seen as extortioners and oppressors. Jesus chose Matthew in part due to his skills as a scribe. Matthew immediately and completely obeyed Jesus' command to follow Him.

Introducing The Servant

God's people Israel certainly didn't expect their long-awaited Messiah to come as such a humble "Servant King," but Mark's gospel makes clear that Jesus perfectly fulfills Isaiah's prophecy about God's Suffering Servant (Isaiah 53), while John the Baptizer served as the messenger sent by God to prepare the way before Him as foretold by Malachi 3:1.

The Twelve – Thomas

Thomas gets a bad rap and the common nickname "Doubting Thomas" due to the well-known stories from the gospel of John in which Thomas first refused to believe the other apostles' report about the resurrected Jesus appearing to them, and then a week later Jesus' mild rebuke of Thomas saying, "Be not unbelieving, but believing." But does Thomas really deserve our scorn and ridicule. After all, the other apostles refused to believe the report from the women to whom Jesus appeared at the empty tomb until He appeared to them later. Furthermore, once Thomas touched and saw the resurrected Jesus for himself, his faith in the Gospel was fulfilled as he fell down in worship declaring, "My LORD and my God!"

Will You Go?

On the evening He was betrayed, Jesus gave a new commandment to His disciples - that we are to love one another, saying that all people will know that we disciples of Jesus by the love we show toward one another. Later in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed for all of those who would come to believe in His Gospel through the words of His disciples. We who are followers of Jesus have a sacred calling from our LORD to go forth and share the Good News of salvation in Him with the lost and dying world all around us who desperately need to hear. Therefore, Pastor Brian asks simple yet critical question. In response to our call from Jesus, Will you go?

Gospel Oriented

Everything we think, say, or do is rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Who we are, how we live, and why we exist is because of His finished work on the cross, in the tomb, and as the risen King. This knowledge is the foundation for our lives. The Gospel is not a compartment of our lives, but the life-giving source from which we daily consume.

Community Centered

God never intended for man to be alone. He understands how much we need each other and intends for us to live life together as a community of believers. We are to share in the messy, painful, and difficult circumstances we face on a day-to-day basis. Also, we are to share the merciful, grace filled, joyful, and peaceful times as well. We desire to be genuine, compassionate, loving, forgiving, and serving people, just like Jesus.

Mission Driven

We are to live each day on mission. From beginning to end, our day is to be lived with God’s Kingdom in mind. In Matthew 28 Jesus said to “Go into ALL the world.” Go into our local community, our state, our nation, and every corner of the world with the life-giving good news that can only be found in a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ!
